Bird’s Eye View of Two People in a Tub

Because the tub is designed for one person,
two cannot fit comfortably.
One person places her head in the corner
to the left of the faucet and, turning to her side,
extends her legs to the free edge of the tub.
The other rests his head on the far corner
by the same wall and slides his legs under hers,
grasping the free edge with his heels.
He turns to his left to make room
for her, who bends her knees to do the same.
Both bodies then sink into the remaining space.
Now there is no movement.
Each can see the other across the still water.
Each knows the twisted spine underneath
and the heaviness of the unsupported skull,
and like this they wait for a miracle.
